peter adams portrait

Renowned travel photographer Peter Adams died suddenly at the end of 2016. Respected for his wide-ranging, stunning photographic and film work, Peter had no formal arts training (no BA to his name!) forging his way through hard work, imagination and dedication to his craft. With an eye for an image, he was constantly on the move and notched up over 82 countries in the course of his career.

This annual award honours his life and the legacy he leaves. To see Peter’s extensive photo library, take a seat and open your laptop to www.padamsphoto.co.uk  and be inspired!

Frequently Asked Questions….

Who is eligible for this bursary?
Final year graduating students on the BA (Hons) Photography degree at University of the West of England, Bristol.  (The bursary has been established specifically for this UWE Photography course and not available to any other institution, which is incredibly generous of the Peter Adams Ltd Trust.)

What is the prize?
£500 travel bursary to produce a project.

Do I have to travel abroad?
No the bursary can also cover travel in the UK.

Does it have to be a brand new project or can it already have been started?
Both! It is ok to build-on a project you have already begun during your time on the course.  That would give you a strong starting point.  It is also ok to start a brand new project in a new location.

What will happen to the project after I have completed it?
In return, upon completions of your project we would like you to write an illustrated article about your project/experience and to forward four photographs (jpeg or tif) from the series by April 2018. Your photographs and words will then be profiled on the Peter Adams Photography website in recognition of your work/award.  You own the copyright of the work and can use it for any purpose you wish. We just ask that when you feature the work on your website and other places, that you credit it was funded by the The Peter Adams Travel Bursary Award.

How do I apply?
The application process is very straight forward.  Fill out this simple application form and email it to – suze@padamsphoto.com

Download the application form here – Application form – THE PETER ADAMS TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD

When is the deadline?
Monday 3rd June 2019, at 9am

How will my application be judged?
The application will be judged by a panel, comprising of members of the Peter Adams Photography Ltd Trust, and teaching staff from your photography course. The panel will be looking at the following criteria to judge the applications.

  • the innovative subject focus of your proposal, and what story you are aiming to tell,
  • your underpinning set of ideas,
  • your research and preparatory work already accomplished,
  • your proposed creative approach and visual style,
  • your consideration of ethical and sustainability implications,
  • the message you want your work to carry.

How will I find out if I have been awarded the bursary?

The winner of the award will be announced at your graduation ceremony in July 2018.  (If you are not able to attend the graduation ceremony we will contact you at the details you provide in the application, but of course we hope you are able to attend your graduation!)

If you have any further questions about this bursary then please contact Dr Shawn Sobers.  (If email then please put Travel Bursary Query in the subject header).

Contact any of the tutors if you’d like to discuss your project idea.

Travel has featured on the UWE BA (Hons) Photography programme, particularly at L3, for some years now. Work made in Iceland, Ukraine, South Africa and China have picked up accolades and led to graduates picking up commissions, assisting work etc. Here are a few examples of the work of recent graduates, featuring very different styles.
